About

Our History

A group of determined and dedicated Lawrence County farmers got together in 1946 to form what was to become Lawrence Farmers Cooperative. The 1946 incorporating directors were J.O. Thomas, Chester Venable, Ralph O’Conner, E.S. Heatherly, W.W. Pettus, John Kelly, W.H. Hyde, Charles C. Lehnert, Sam Smith, Rex Morrison and Robert Plunkett. Over the years, the cooperative rented, leased, and purchased property in both Leoma, Lawrenceburg, and St. Joseph to serve as store locations, warehouses, and storage.

The first store was located in Leoma and a second location was opened in 1959 at 1007 North Military in Lawrenceburg, which served as the main store beginning in 1962. In 1966, the Co-op purchased land from Murray Ohio Manufacturing where they would build a bulk fertilizer building and install scales. They also purchased a spreader truck at that time. The next year, they set up a grain-buying station at the North Military location and in 1968 purchased a bulk feed truck for farm delivery.

The Co-op expanded its service in 1969 to include a modern showroom for animal health and garden supplies and a soybean and wheat buying service. In the next few years, they added more grain bins and spreader and feeder trucks. In the mid-to-late 1970s, the Co-op built a chemical impregnator and a new bulk fertilizer facility where bulk fertilizer could be unloaded directly from a hopper car into the building.

In the next 10 years, numerous pieces of equipment were purchased as the Co-op expanded its customer base and service. In 1985, Lawrence Farmers Cooperative opened a branch store in St. Joseph. In 1990, property was purchased at 400 Crews Street and a new showroom and warehouse were built. The Crews Street store opened in November 1993 with a grand opening celebration held Dec. 3 and 4.  In the mid ‘90s, Co-op upgraded their feeder, fertilizer, and auto care capabilities with new conveyors and machinery and added to their power equipment services with the opening of a small engine repair shop at their main location.

Today, Lawrence Farmers Cooperative has more than 900 members and has grown from a small, leased location into a multi-million-dollar operation.  We are proud of what has been accomplished since 1946 and look forward to a promising future.
